The Councils
About Council
The Class Councils are some of the oldest and most important forms of self-governance at the University of Virginia. The modern Class Councils separately represent each of the four undergraduate classes at the University. Class based governments formally got their start in 1908, when the students standardized the election of Class Officers. Each Council is led by a President and Vice President. The officers then appoint their Class’s Treasurer and Secretary. The officers then appoint roughly fifty people to serve as Council Members. The Councils are responsible for lighting of the Lawn, Third-Year Ceremony, and Final Exercises. Learn more about the structure of the organization and how you can get involved.
